Advanced Leadership Development Series for Middle & Senior Hospital Administrators offered by Monash University Malaysia

The Advanced Leadership Development Series is a collaborative endeavour between (Future) Southeast Asian Centre for Workplace Wellbeing at Monash University Malaysia and Malaysian Doctor Healthcare Management Society (MDHMS). This one-day leadership development workshop series aims to equip middle and senior hospital administrators with advanced leadership competencies focused on managing diverse teams, capitalising analytics for informed decisions and reflecting upon the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in hospital management. Through a combination of interactive discussions, case studies and self-assessments, participants will gain insights into effective leadership knowledge and skills tailored to the healthcare sector.

 

This workshop marks the beginning, with additional leadership development workshops planned for the future.

Collaborative Team Management: Managing Diversity for Excellent Performance
Professor Jane Terpstra Tong

This workshop is designed as a dynamic and impactful session for middle and senior managers, focusing on deepening their understanding and practical application of diversity and inclusion strategies within their teams. This enriched approach, starting with a self-assessment, enables the workshop to be not only informative but also transformative, equipping managers with both theoretical insights and practical tools to foster a more inclusive workplace.

Data-Driven Decisions: Harnessing the Power of Analytics for Informed Decisions Professor Erniel Barrios

AI and Hospital Management: Exploring the Transformative Role of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

This workshop provides participants a framework to understand and leverage AI for improved operational efficiency and patient care. The workshop covers a broad range of topics, including an introduction to AI technologies like machine learning and natural language processing, their applications in clinical and administrative settings, and the operational benefits of AI in hospital management.

Our Speakers

Professor Jane Terpstra Tong 

​Jane Terpstra Tong is a Professor of Management at Monash University Malaysia, specialising in cross-cultural organisational behaviour. Her recent research focuses on well-being and career-related topics, such as flow, mindfulness, and career satisfaction. Adept at survey research, she has published in top-tier international journals. As a two-time presidential award winning educator, her education effectiveness reaches beyond the classroom to corporate clients, with her having led corporate training programs for multinational corporations including Tetra Pak (Sweden-based), Eppendorf (Germany-based), and Eagleburgmann (Japanese-Germany venture). Additionally, her consulting work in Malaysia has involved a year-long project with The Asia Foundation, an international NGO.  She is also a TEDx-talk speaker and a masterclass instructor. 

Professor Jane holds a PhD from The University of Manchester, UK, an MBA, and a bachelor's degree in political science from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Beyond her native Hong Kong, she has lived and worked in various countries, such as China, Macao, Indonesia, and the U.S. 

Professor Erniel Barrios 

​Erniel is Professor and Head of Econometrics and Business Statistics Department, School of Business, Monash University Malaysia. Prior to his career at Monash Malaysia, Professor Erniel has served as Professor at School of Statistics, University of the Philippines Diliman, Visiting Professor at Karlstad University (Sweden) and Visiting Researcher at Asian Development Bank Institute (Japan). His research interests focus on computational statistics, computational econometrics and nonparametric methods with applications in spatiotemporal modeling, time series models, big data analytics and financial markets. Professor Erniel provided business consulting (focused on risk analytics) for various companies in the Philippines (fast food restaurant chain, energy generation, manufacturing).  This includes introducing big data analytics from consumer usage history to generate business and consumer insights for a leading telecommunication company in the Philippines. He is also an elected member of the International Statistical Institute (2012), member of Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering, Econometric Society, East Asian Economic Association, and the Philippine Statistical Association.

Dr. Nik Nailah 

Dr. Nik Nailah is a computer scientist specialising in applying cognitive science theories to develop multi-agent systems. She is a lecturer at the School of Information Technology and her research interest is in developing cost-effective AI applications for underserved rural patients diagnosed with heart failure and cancer disease. Specifically, she looks into applying multi-agent systems and cognitive science methods and approaches to developing the applications. Her research work has been featured in the STAR newspaper particularly in analysing hospital systems and developing early prototyping of improved human computer interface design. Dr. Nailah was invited as a Google Tech Talk speaker at Google Mountain View, California and also nominated as one of the three finalists for “The Technovisionarie - BlackBerry Women and Technology Award”. Additionally, Dr Nik Nailah was a recipient of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Award for Excellence in Education (Open Category) for her contribution to establishing project-based learning in the industry for undergraduate courses at Monash University Malaysia.
